Miles Collier Named Recipient of Vasek Polak Award
9/22/2005 - Miles Collier, proprietor of the Naples (Fla.) Automobile Museum and owner of 20 vintage racing Porsches, was presented with the annual Vasek Polak Award by Brian Redman during ceremonies at the Lime Rock Vintage Fall Festival over the Labor Day weekend.
Previous winners include Dave Morse, Tommy Trabue, Ottokar Jacobs, Hurley Haywood, Brian Redman, Ben Pon and Jacky Ickx.
Vasek passed away in April, 1997 from injuries received in a high speed Porsche accident on the Autobahn, near Regensburg, Germany.
At the time of his death, he was a major dealer for Porsche, BMW, Audi, VW, Saab and Subaru cars.
Following Vasek's death, his Trustees, Jeffrey Bucher and Sam Menzelos, commissioned noted automotive sculptor, J.Paul Nesse to produce a bronze bust of Vasek working on a Porsche RSK Spyder and instituted the annual "Vasek Polak Award" to go to an individual who has demonstrated a great affinity with Porsche.
The original bronze artwork is kept at Porsche Cars North America headquarters in Atlanta.
In 1956, Vasek Polak came to America from Prague, Czechoslovakia.
At the age of 42, and speaking no English, he bought a VW bus in New York and drove cross-country to Hermosa Beach, CA, where he opened an independent VW and Porsche repair garage.
In 1959 he became the first authorized Porsche-only dealership in the U.S.A.
In the ensuing years, Vasek amassed one of the world's largest Porsche race car and associated parts collections.
Vasek's considerable assets went to establish The Vasek and Anna Maria Polak Charitable Foundation, Inc. and the Vasek Polak Institute which are primarily dedicated to support hospitals, a medical research center and healthcare institutions in the South Bay area of Southern California, as well as a breast diagnostic center in Vasek's native Prague.
